Circuits Designed by Dave Johnson, P.E. :

Nine-Volt Battery Voltage Monitor -  This circuit turns on a LED whenever the voltage of a standard 9v battery connected to the circuit drops below 7. 2 volts. It uses a LTC1440 comparator, which also contains a 1. 18v reference diode. In standby mode, the circuit draws only 4uA . . . [Circuit by Dave Johnson P.E.,  07/09/06]

NMH/NiCd 6v Battery Tester -  I designed this circuit to test rechargeable six volt battery packs under constant current conditions. As designed, the circuit applies a 10 amp load to the battery pack. A heat sink must be used on the main power transistor . . . [Hobby Circuit designed by David Johnson P.E.,  12/12/04]

Microamps monitor dual-supply batteries -  03/02/98 EDN Design Idea   (File contains many circuits, please scroll to find this one)05D21691The low-power circuit in Figure 1 monitors two 9V batteries in a dual-supply configuration and turns on the Battery Low LED if either battery voltage drops below its limit. It also provides two shutdown signals you can use to turn off voltage regulators, such as Maxim's MAX663/664 positive and negative regulators. By using low-power voltage references and op amps, the circuit holds the current drain to approximately 45 µA from each battery, with the positive drain rising to approximately 1 mA when the LED turns on. . . .  [by Bruce Anderson, University of Wisconsin--Madison]

Monitor battery voltage with this circuit -  11/21/96 EDN Design Idea   The circuits in Figure 1 monitors four NiCd rechargeable batteries and causes the LED to flash if the voltage of the batteries goes lower than 4V. The circuit consumes only 8 mA of current under normal operating conditions. . . .  [by Yongping Xia, Philips Lighting Electronics Co, Torrance, CA]

Monitor Circuit Conserves Battery Energy -  04/19/12  EDN Design Idea   Many battery-powered systems require a visual indication when the battery needs replacement. LEDs often serve as the indicator, but they can draw as much as 10 mA of current. This excessive current drain unduly accelerates the battery’s discharging and cu. . .  [by Brian Huffman, Linear Technology Corp, Milpitas, CA ]
