Safely deep-discharge NiCd battery - 04/29/99 EDN Design Idea (contains several designs, scroll to find this one)
Nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries can possess an undesirable memory effect due to partial discharges. The remedy is
a complete discharge before charging again. Figure 1a shows a simple circuit that performs this feat. . . . [by

Sailor’s Battery Meter - On a
sailboat, the condition of the battery is a major concern for obvious reasons. On the author’s boat, a 120 Ah
lead-acid battery is charged from a 25 watts solar panel. The battery monitor described here was designed to give
peace of mind. It consists of two sub circuits: a sensor and a control/readoutmust register on this site. . .

Simple Battery-Status Indicator Uses Two LEDs - 08/12/10
EDN Design Idea Use LED brightness to indicate battery charge. Properly maintained rechargeable batteries can
provide good service and long life. Maintenance involves regular monitoring of battery voltage. The circuit in
Figure 1 works in most rechargeable batteries. It comprises a reference LED, LEDREF, which operates at a constant
current of 1 mA and provides reference light of constant intensity regardless of battery voltage. It accomplishes
this task by connecting resistor R1 in series with the diode. Therefore, even if the battery voltage changes from
a charged state to a discharged state, the change in current is only 10%. . . . [by Abhijeet Deshpande, People’s

disconnects load - 02/17/00 EDN Design Idea Placing a
load-disconnect circuit on the output of a bootstrapped step-up regulator allows the regulator to start with load

isolates the battery. . . [by Larry Suppan]
Simple Circuit Disconnects Load from Battery - 03/14/96 EDN Design Idea To prevent battery damage, the circuit in Figure 1 disconnects
the load at a predetermined level of load voltage. This load voltage, VTRIP, is closely proportional to the
battery voltage. R1 and R2 determine the level of VTRIP. . . [by Michael Keagy, Maxim Integrated Products,

Simple circuit monitors battery voltage - 11/21/96 EDN Design Idea The circuit in Figure 1 monitors four NiCd rechargeable batteries
and causes the LED to flash if the voltage of the batteries goes lower than 4V. The circuit consumes only 8 mA of
current under normal operating conditions. IC1 is an eight-pin IC that includes an op amp, a comparator, and a 1.
2V zener diode. The zener diode connects to the negative input of the comparator in the IC as a reference. R6 and
R7 divide the battery voltage. . . [by Yongping Xia, Philips Lighting Electronics Co, Torrance, CA]
