Circuits Designed by Dave Johnson, P.E. :
Voltage Monitor for a 9v Battery -  Nine voltage batteries are used in a wide variety of electronic devices. But, you often don’t know when it is time to change the battery until the device stops operating. The hobby circuit below provides a visual indication when the battery needs to be . . . Safely deep-discharge NiCd battery -  04/29/99 EDN Design Idea (contains several designs, scroll to find this one)   Nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries can possess an undesirable memory effect due to partial discharges. The remedy is a complete discharge before charging again. Figure 1a shows a simple circuit that performs this feat. . . .  [by Jim Hagerman, Science & Technology International, Honolulu, HI]

Sailor’s Battery Meter -  On a sailboat, the condition of the battery is a major concern for obvious reasons. On the author’s boat, a 120 Ah lead-acid battery is charged from a 25 watts solar panel. The battery monitor described here was designed to give peace of mind. It consists of two sub circuits: a sensor and a control/readoutmust register on this site. . .  [Published in Elecktor July/Augu, 2010]

Shunt Regulator Monitors Battery Voltage -  09/18/08  EDN Design Idea   A shunt regulator and a handful of associated components function as a battery monitor. . .  [by Vladimir Rentyuk, Modul-98 Ltd, Zaporozhye, Ukraine]

Simple Battery-Status Indicator Uses Two LEDs -  08/12/10  EDN Design Idea   Use LED brightness to indicate battery charge. Properly maintained rechargeable batteries can provide good service and long life. Maintenance involves regular monitoring of battery voltage. The circuit in Figure 1 works in most rechargeable batteries. It comprises a reference LED, LEDREF, which operates at a constant current of 1 mA and provides reference light of constant intensity regardless of battery voltage. It accomplishes this task by connecting resistor R1 in series with the diode. Therefore, even if the battery voltage changes from a charged state to a discharged state, the change in current is only 10%. . . .  [by Abhijeet Deshpande, People’s Education Society Institute of Technology, Bangalore, India]

Simple car battery voltage monitor -  Automotive, car and motorcycle electronic circuit diagrams / circuit schematics. . .  [G.L. Chemelec]

Simple circuit disconnects load -  02/17/00  EDN Design Idea   Placing a load-disconnect circuit on the output of a bootstrapped step-up regulator allows the regulator to start with load currents much higher than would otherwise be possible ( Figure 1 ). During shutdown, the disconnect completely isolates the battery. . .  [by Larry Suppan]

Simple Circuit Disconnects Load from Battery -  03/14/96 EDN Design Idea   To prevent battery damage, the circuit in Figure 1 disconnects the load at a predetermined level of load voltage. This load voltage, VTRIP, is closely proportional to the battery voltage. R1 and R2 determine the level of VTRIP. . .  [by Michael Keagy, Maxim Integrated Products, Sunnyvale, CA]

Simple circuit indicates a Low battery -  02/03/14 - EDN Design Idea   It may seem a bit counterintuitive to power on an LED when a battery is already low, but this Design Idea does it with aplomb. . .  [by James Wood]

Simple Circuit Indicates Health of Lithium-Ion Batteries -  05/14/09  EDN Design Idea   A simple inexpensive circuit quickly indicates a battery pack's health. . .  [by Fritz Weld, Friedberg, Germany]

Simple circuit monitors battery voltage -  11/21/96 EDN Design Idea   The circuit in Figure 1 monitors four NiCd rechargeable batteries and causes the LED to flash if the voltage of the batteries goes lower than 4V. The circuit consumes only 8 mA of current under normal operating conditions. IC1 is an eight-pin IC that includes an op amp, a comparator, and a 1. 2V zener diode. The zener diode connects to the negative input of the comparator in the IC as a reference. R6 and R7 divide the battery voltage. . .  [by Yongping Xia, Philips Lighting Electronics Co, Torrance, CA]

The remedy is a complete discharge before charging again. Figure 1a shows a simple circuit that performs this feat. . . .  [by Jim Hagerman, Science & Technology International, Honolulu, HI]

Solid-state relays simplify monitoring electric car battery-voltage -  02/19/04  EDN Design Idea   Figure 1 shows the propulsion system of an electric vehicle. It includes an electric motor, drive electronics, a mechanical transmission, vehicle control/power management, a charging system, and a battery. The long-term performance. . .  [by Robert Krause, Fairchild Semiconductor, San Jose, CA]

TRUE RMS-TO-DC Adapter for DVM -  The main differences between one of the application circuits in the AD737 data sheet are the addition of a MCP1702 micropower 3. 3 volt regulator to split the power supply and two 11 volt zener diodes to prevent the voltage across the chip to become high enough to damage the chip in case the input is connected to an excessive voltage while in the 200 mv full scale setting. . . .  [From Dick Cappels' project pages]

Using the LTC1325 Battery Management Ic -  AN64 App Note 64 details characteristics of various battery types and appropriate charging management schemes. The LTC1325 battery management IC is highlighted along with information for applying it to any type battery. Techniques and circuitry for conditioning, charging and monitoring NiCd, NiMH, Li-Ion and Lead-Acid batteries are presented. . . .  [Linear Technology]
