Ultra Low Power
Human Finger Detector - The circuit below seems
to work well and averages a current drain of only 10 microamps from a lithium cell. It uses a single CA4013
dual D flip/flop. One section is wired as a pulse generator. It applies 10us 10ma pulses to a LED inside a
slotted optical sensor at a rate of about 50Hz. The phototransistor in the second half of the sensor detects
the pulses and sends a pulse to the data input of the second flip/flop in the 4013 package. If there is
nothing between the LED and the phototransistor, the inverting output of the 4013 remains low. . . .

Use a 555 timer as a switch-mode power supply
- 11/14/02 EDN Design Idea Most switch-mode power supplies rely on a PWM
(pulse-width-modulated] output that is controlled via voltage feedback. A 555-timer IC can inexpensively
perform PWM. The circuit in Figure 1 shows how to turn a 555 PWM circuit into an . . . [by Aaron Lager,

Use A Three-Phase Rectifier and Voltage Reducer for Offline Single-Phase Supplies
- 04/06/12 EDN Design Idea Missing diodes create gaps to
allow voltage reduction. Some industrial applications require you to feed a low-power dc/dc converter from a
three-phase source and possibly to deal with line-to-line voltages of 200 or 400V rms. Further, the neutral
terminal of the ac source may be unavailable for connection, forcing you to use a line-to-line voltage link,
which means a higher input voltage. Voltage faults can happen in one or two phases, and some applications
require the power supply to keep working despite this problem. . . . [by JB Castro-Miguens, Cesinel, Madrid,
