Temperature Data Logger -  This project will show you how to build Temperature Logger using a Stamp II connected to a PC serial port. I was planing on using the DS1620, but used a LM335 temperature sensor because it only needs a two wire interface and it is easy to waterproof. All i did to waterproof it was to put some heat srink tubing around the 3 wires then around the hole sensor. . .  [shaunwilson19 AT yahoo.com]

Tiny Server -  The device that converts RS485 and RS232 to the ethernet LAN has been developed. The device was built with the Lantronix XPort embedded ethernet server and the industrial standard differential RS485 transceiver, 75176 and the single-end RS232 driver, MAX232. The XPort module provides 10/100 ethernet port and the +3V logic UART. The 75176 and MAX232 are +5V TTL logic. . .  [Wichit Sirichote, designer]

Trace voltage-current curves on your PC -  11-Oct-01 EDN Design Idea   Some years ago, one of the fundamental electronic instruments was the laboratory curve tracer. A CRT display would sweep out terminal behavior (current versus voltage] from which you could derive mathematical models. Track multisite temperatures on your PC -  04/18/02  EDN Design Idea   The low-cost circuit in Figure 1 allows you to track four remote temperatures with thermistor sensors through the parallel port on your PC. This four-zone thermometer instrument has a temperature range of –40 to +90°C and a resolution of better than ±1°C. You can calibrate its accuracy to within 1°C over a 0 to 50°C span and within 3°C over a –40 to +90°C span. Thermistors are low-cost , passive, rugged components, making them a good choice for temperature sensing. The signal-conditioning hardware in Figure 1 performs a simple voltage division to partially linearize the thermistors. . . .  [by Clayton Grantham]

Transfer data frames over asynchronous RS-232C lines -  01/15/98  EDN Design Idea   The asynchronous RS-232C interface is a simple, low-cost option for interconnecting processor-based systems. In many applications, you need to transfer variable-size messages. However, the character-oriented RS-232C protocolThis F. . .  [by SK Shenoy, Naval Physical and Oceanographic Lab, Kochi, India]

TSR Logs Assembler & Compiler Errors in File -  04/27/95 EDN Design Idea   If you use a PC to develop software for embedded systems, you probably still use good, old MS-DOs for mOst of your processing, because mOst compilers, assemblers, and linkers don't run under MS Windows. If you're developing a sizable program, you probably use automated procedures such as batch files or "make" files to build and rebuild your target program. When you use batch files or make files, capturing the PC's screen output in a disk file is more convenient than sitting around, watching everything endlessly scroll by on the screen. . . .  [by John S Santic, Computer Consultant, Frederick, MD]
