Serves as milliohmmeter -  04/15/04 EDN Design Ideas:  When I was recently debugging a design, I discovered that a short circuit existed from a ground plane to a power plane.  I did not have access to a milliohm meter or an equivalent tester for locating this type of short circuit.  So, I logged onto the internet to find an easily constructible milliohm meter Design by AM Hunt, Lancaster Hunt Systems Ltd, Shepperton, UK

Set/Reset Flip Flop -  This is an example of a set/reset flip flop using discrete components.  When power is applied, only one of the transistors will conduct causing the other to remain off.  The conducting transistor can be turned off by grounding it's base through the push button which causes the collector voltage to rise and turn on the opposite transistor.  Copyright 2006 __ Designed by Bill Bowden

Setup Evaluates Response Of Mechanical System -  09/15/94 EDN Design Ideas:  The test setup in Fig 1 determines the ac frequency response of a mechanical system.  in this case, the mechanical system includes a dc motor, switch-mode driver, and the motor's mechanical load.  The HP3562A dynamic signal analyzer generates a 1V p-p sinusoid whose frequency sweeps from 1 Hz to 1 kHz.  The signal also has a 2V-dc offset.  This signal feeds an LM319 comparator, IC 1, functioning as a PWM, IC has some hysteresis for noise rejection.  An HP8116A signal generator feeds a 20-kHz, 0 to 5V triangular wave to the PWM's other input.    Design by Jorge Domenech, Hewlett-Packard France, Villefontaine, France

Setup Tests Bit-Error Rate -  03/18/04 EDN Design Ideas:  Traditionally, the reception quality of a digital receiver is expressed in terms of BER (bit-error rate].  This figure is the proportion of received bit errors in a given period.  Typically, you measure the BER in the lab by applying an RF signal, modulated by a pseudorandom code, to the receiver under test Design by Israel Schneiderman

Shadow activated (or hand wave) Motion Detector -  The circuit below works quite well in typical indoor room lighting.  I would not recommend its use in direct sunlight.  Two small PIN photodiodes positioned about one inch apart form a shadow detector.  With no shadow cast on the devices, both devices produce nearly identical current levelsCircuit Solution by David A. Johnson P.E.-August, 2005

Shaping Amp & Amplitude Detector -  03/15/01 EDN Design Ideas:  The use of solid-state detectors connected to charge amplifiers requires appropriate conditioning of the output signals, because of the signals' long decay time.  Moreover, you must 'stretch' the peaks of the shaped pulses for a period sufficient for A/D conversion.  For a single detector, you can use a relatively expensive module.  For a large detector array, you need to develop an ASIC .  For a moderate number of detectors, you can use an inexpensive circuit that handles an array of 19 drift diodes connected to a scintillating crystal of cesium-iodide (Figure 1). Design by Elio Rossi

Shock Sensor Amplifier (Accelerometer) -  A shock sensor is a capacitive piezoelectric element which generates a charge under physical acceleration.  This charge can be converted to a voltage and filtered using high valued resistors and a high input impedance CMOS amplifier such as the LTC6081.  This circuit has a gain of 100 and output 109mV per g of acceleration__ Linear Technology/Analog Devices App Note, Mar 16, 2010

Shock-Sensor Prevents Data Corruption -  07/04/96 EDN Design Ideas:   Hard-disk drives for laptop and other portable applications need to withstand significant g-force shocks when operating.  A typical 1.8-in.  drive writes servo information over less than 15% of the disk's active area, which means that the read/write head spends more than 85% Design by Carolyn Platt, Raltron Electronics Corp, Miami, FL

Short Beeper #2 -  The One Chip Beeper is an audible continuity tester.  it works well in circuits that already have components installed because only wires and low value resistors will cause a tone.  The One Chip Beeper will not turn on diode junctions or damage sensitive circuits.  The one piece construction is compact and easy to use.  No power switch is needed due to its very low power consumption.  Use any 9 volt battery.  Aninexpensive carbon/ zinc battery will last almost forever __ Contact info @ rhoent.com

Simple Circuit Anticipator Improves On Earlier Idea -  EDN Design Ideas:  05/24/2012   A self-biasing thermistor circuit had an overall dominant thermal/electrical time constant as small as 25 msec but had a significantly rounded response following a square (thermal) input pulse of 100 msec; the source was a pulsed blue LED.  A single-op-amp-based “anticipator-like” circuit generated a more faithful picture of the actual input excitation, and improved on the circuit described in a previous Design ideas (Reference 1).  The lowpass filter in Figure 1, with an RC time constant of approximately 25 msec, models the circuit. Simple Circuit BFO Metal Detector -  BFO (beat frequency oscillator) metal detectors use two oscillators, each of which produces a radio frequency.  One of these oscillators uses a coil of wire that we call the search loop.  The second oscillator uses a much smaller coil of wire, and is usually inside the control box and is called the reference oscillator.  By adjusting the oscillators so their frequencies are very nearly the same, the difference between them is made audible as a beat note __ Designed by Essex Metal Detectors

Simple Circuit BFO Metal Detector -  This simple BFO metal detector requires only a few of components and an evening's work.  The two oscillators are simple Colpitts designs using BJT transistors.  The reference oscillator's frequency is approximately 370kHz, slightly tunable with the help of a silicon varactor diode.  The outputs of the two oscillators are fed to a mixer made with Q3 and Q4.  The signal then goes through a low-pass filter (R13, C13) and a JFET preamp.  The LM386 audio amplifier has a gain of 20, more than enough for most headphones.  if you need more gain, you can add a 10uF capacitor between pins 1 and 8.__ hobbyteam @ hobby-hour.com
