Fast Integer Multipliers Fit In FPGA -  05/12/94 EDN-Design Ideas You can fit a fast and compact digital multiplier into a field-programmable gate array (FPGA].  The technique involves using small look-up tables to find partial products and then adding the partial products.  The key factor for making the design compact, fast, and easy to implement is to make the look-up tables for the partial products as small as possible.  This multiplier can quickly multiply a number by a constant; changing the constant momentarily takes the multiplier off-line Design by Kenneth David Chapman, Xilinx Ltd, byfleet, Surrey, UK

FCTS Project -  many projects listed.  Explore the site to find one that works for your application.   __ Designed by Leonid Sapozhnikov

FFT Made Easy -  PIC Project  Disclaimer:  I don't know whether this idea is original, I only know that it works.  Normally, doing DFT  (direct fourier transform) means multiplying each data point with the sine and cosine coefficients and then summing the totals for all points.  The resultant sums are then 'vector added' by taking the 'square root of the sum of the squares'.   __ Designed by Luhan Monat, Mesa, AZ

FIFO Makes Cheap Waveform Generator -  12/21/95 EDN-Design Ideas The circuit in Figure 1 shows the basic configuration of a simple and inexpensive arbitrary waveform generator.  IC1’s 82C54 produces the timebase for the wave table.  This IC can generate a 152-Hz to 5-MHz clock under software co Design by Todd Williams, Napco Security Systems Amityville, NY

FIFO provides data-width conversion -  09/26/02  EDN-Design Ideas Many designs require FIFO elastic buffers to form a bridge between subsystems with different clock rates and access requirements.  However, in some applications, you need FIFO buffers for data conversion.  One example is the case in  Design by David Lou, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium

Finite State Machine Programmable Logic Controller -  Finite State Machine based Programmable Logic Controller.7 Inputs  8 Outputs  Simple IF/THEN/ELSE based compiler language generates direct EPROM files.   __ Designed by David L. Jones

FIR filter scheme saves ROM storage space -  05/11/95 EDN-Design Ideas You can easily implement single-bit FIR filters using ROM look-up tables, which allows you to avoid costly multiplier accumulators.  Unfortunately, as filter order increases, so does the size of the ROM.  Fig 1 shows how you can reduce the storage requirement for larger-order filters.  The following difference equation defines an N-tap FIR filter, where y  (n) , x  (n-m) , and h  (m) are, respectively, the output sequence, the input sequence delayed by m samples, and the impulse response  (coefficients) of the filter: Design by CA Jalaludeen, Defence R&D Organisation, Kochi, Kerala, India

Fixing Transformer Buzz In the Class-A Amplifier -  Since the 20W Stereo Class-A amplifier was published in 2007, it has been widely acclaimed for its sound quality.  But there has been a consistent niggle experienced by quite a few constructors ? low level buzz from the power transformer.  We recently took a look at this problem and have come up with a cure.__ SiliconChip

Flash Based-Microcontroller Programmer-Atmel 8051 -  The Atmel Flash devices are ideal for developing, since they can be reprogrammed easy and fast.  If you need more code space for your application, particularly for developing 89Cxx projects with C language.  Atmel offers a broad range of microcontrollers based on the 8051 architecture, with on-chip Flash program memory __ Designed by Wichit Sirichote

Flash-Memory Modules Emulate Disk Drive -  09/01/94  EDN-Design Ideas Because more and more flash-memory modules look just like familiar disk drives to your system, designing in fast and rugged mass storage has never been simpler.  Companies promoting the use of flash memory in mass-storage applications seem to have made an  Design by Gary Legg, Executive Editor

Flying Saucer -  This project was inspired by one of those solar powered lawn lights.  I had taken the bottom off of one and hung it in a tree.  A neighbor commented that it resembled a small flying saucer.  Hmmmm.   __ Designed by Luhan Monat, Mesa, AZ

Form Random-Bit-Sequence Generator -  05/10/01  EDN-Design Ideas A random-bit-sequence generator is basic equipment for prototyping and testing any data-transmission system.  You use such a generator when measuring BER  (bit-error rate) and pattern-dependent effects in a transmission system.  Such effects can include base Design by Przemyslaw Krehlik

Four Decade Digital Counter Project -  This project shows how to build a fast speed four decades counter with an amazing digital integrated circuit.  the 4026 CMOS IC.  With this IC you save a lot of time and money building digital counter/divider projects.  In electronics books you will find different pulse counter circuits; most of them using TTL logic  (transistor-transistor logic) that need two IC's for driving a seven segment LED display, which require more troublesome wiring and a lot of time.   __ Designed by braincambre500 @ yahoo.com

Four-Digit Alarm Control KeypA - D -  Alarm Control Keypads:  This Keypad is suitable for the Modular Burglar Alarm.  However, it has other applications.  Pressing a single key will energize the relay.  Entering the Four-Digit code of your choice will de-energize it.  __ Designed by Ron J.

Four-Digit Keypad Controlled Switch -  Universal Keypad-Controlled Switches:  This is a Universal version of the Four-Digit Alarm Control Keypad.  I have modified the design to free up the relay contacts.  This allows the circuit to operate as a general-purpose switch.  I've used a SPCO/SPDT relaybut you can use a multi-pole relay if you wish.  __ Designed by Ron J.

FSK Modulator Enables Data Transmission Over Low-Speed Link -  06/11/09 EDN-Design Ideas Send digital data over a low-speed link.  FSK  (frequency-shift keying) is a type of signal modulation for transmitting digital data over an analog communication link.  An FSK modulator comprises a digitally controlled sine-wave generator whose frequency shifts between two predetermined frequencies in response to the two logic levels of the digital data.  The circuit in Figure 1 generates a sine wave by continuously sampling a single sine cycle.  The output of IC2A is proportional to the currents through R1, R2, and R3.  These resistors connect together at one end to the inverting input of IC2A, which is biased at VCC/2.   Design by Israel Schleicher, Prescott Valley AZ
