Circuits Designed by Dave Johnson, P.E. :
  • Solar Cell Test Fixture
If you are considering building your own solar panel, you might try building the solar cell tester shown below. When constructing a solar panel it is important to make sure that all the solar cells used in the panel be closely matched for their short circuit current. One weak cell will lower the efficiency of the whole panel. The system shown allows individual solar cells to be tested for their short circuit current under a constant light intensity condition....
  • Solar Powered Lithium Ion Battery Charger     NEW
The circuit below feeds a controlled current and voltage to a 3.6v lithium ion battery. The current is limited to 300ma and the voltage is limited to 4.2 volts. The circuit uses a LTC1734 IC from Linear Technology. No diode is needed between the circuit and a 6 volt solar panel....
  • Solar PV cell Test Fixture
This is an illustration of a test fixture, which can be used to test individual solar cells for short circuit current.  Using a PIN photo diode and a control circuit, the solar cells can be tested under constant light level conditions. A halogen incandescent lamp is used as the light source.  (added 7/06)

Shunt Battery Charger Provides 1A Continuous Current:  11/20/97 EDN Design Ideas / (added 2/03) Most battery chargers use nothing more than a series-pass regulator with current limiting. In solar-powered systems, you can't count on having sufficient head room to keep a series regulator alive, so a shunt method is preferable. An example of a simple shunt battery charger consists of an op amp driving a shunt transistor and ballast resistor (Figure 1). The heart of the circuit is IC1, an LT1635, which contains an op amp and a reference. Operation is straightforward. A feedback divider comprising two 1-Mega-ohm resistors senses the battery voltage. The circuit amplifies the internal 200-mV reference to 7.05V and compares this voltage with the feedback signal....

SIMD1 V0:  Nocturnal-Controlled Solar Engine:  The original SIMD1, the V0 does its magic with just a resistor and a Germanium diode.  (added 11/05)

SIMD1 V1:  Nocturnal-Controlled Solar Engine: The V1 is just like the V0, but with polarities reversed.   (added 11/05)

SIMD1 V2:  Nocturnal-Controlled Solar Engine:  The V2 has two flavors, essentially modifications of the V0 and V1, but with a transistor and resistor replacing the diode. This variant turns on earlier (i.e., before it's so dark) and "cleaner" than the V0 and V1.  (added 11/05)

SIMD1 V3:  Nocturnal-Controlled Solar Engine: The V3 is very similar to the NPN flavor of the V2, but with the addition of a FET on the output line. This makes life easier for its attached load.   (added 11/05)

SIMD1/Solar Regulator:  Nocturnal-Controlled Solar Engine: The SIMD1 / Solar Regulator supplies a constant 2V after triggering and permits driving LEDs with constant brightness without the need for current limiting resistors.   (added 11/05)

Simple train detector using ambient light and a photocell:  (circuit / schematic design added 6/06)

SmartCap solar engine:  Bob Shannon originally designed the SmartCap solar engine for a specific purpose -to provide a "burst" of energy to a 'bot right after its source of light goes away. The idea was to introduce a specific behavior -when things got dark for the 'bot, it would have the energy to notice and scurry toward the next spot of bright light.   (added 11/05)

Solar Powered LED Garden Light :  Reverse engineered circuit diagram of a popular mass produced solar light. The light automatically turns on when there is no light falling upon the solar cell, so the parts count is minimal. Solar Powered motor runs on 10 nA:  03/18/04 EDN Design Ideas  /  (added 1/05)  Designs for solar-powered applications with low-duty-cycle requirements can often rely on capacitors for energy storage in place of less reliable batteries. Typical applications include solar positioning, telemetry transmitters, chemical pumps, data loggers, and solar-powered toys. The circuit in Figure 1 can run a small pager motor from the output of a small calculator-type solar cell in near......
