White LED is Powered By One NiMH Cell -  There are a lot of white LED driver circuits floating around.  A popular circuit called the “Joule Thief” can drive one white LED from a single 1.2v or 1.5v battery cell.  Most of these circuits use one or two transistors to form a voltage boost circuit. . . White LED Night Light -  This simple circuit is designed to plug into a standard AC electrical outlet.    it uses four super bright white light emitting diodes (LED) in conjunction with a capacitor coupled full wave rectifier circuit.  The LEDs are mounted in a box and are angled slightly to bounce the light off of a nearby wall. . . . Hobby Circuit designed by David A. Johnson P.E.-May, 2003

White LED Lifetime Tests   -  All white LEDs fade over time.  I find that some LEDs fade in intensity very rapidly while others fade more slowly but every one I have tested would be worthless in a few months to a year.   To speed up the testing process I have modified my constant current LED driver circuit as shown below. . . Weekend Projects with Bre Pettis: Make a Joule Thief -  it's a little wisp of a circuit that allows you to drive a blue or white LED from a low voltage.  Normally, if you want to light up a blue or white LED you need to provide it with 3, 3.5 V, like from a 3 V lithium coin cell.  But a 1.5 V battery like a AA cell simply will not work.  But using the Joule Thief, it works like a charm.  Not only does it work with a brand new battery, but it works until the battery is nearly dead-- down to 0.3 V.  That's well below the point where your other toys will tell you the battery is dead, so it can steal every last joule of energy from the battery (hence the name).  To learn how to make one, watch the video, which is available in a variety of formats.  __ Evil Mad Scientists Laboratories

White's SurFMaster PI (pulse induction) metal Detector schematic diagram -  White's Surfmaster PI is a good quality, fully waterproof, lightweight metal detector with an exceptional depth in saltwater or mineralized ground.  it's ideal for those wishing to search beaches, in the surf or shallow diving.  it works inland too, but such use is not advised as -- like all PI (Pulse induction) designs -- there is no effective discrimination of ferrous objects.  Runs on eight AA size batteries. __ Contact hobbyteam @ hobby-hour.com

Wide dynamic range Field Strength Meter mark I -  When direction-finding in close quarters, fancier direction-finding gear (if you have it) can become useless due to very strong reflections.   in addition, it may be large, cumbersome, and very conspicuous.   At this point one is often very close to the transmitter itself and it's just a matter of figuring out exactly which tree the transmitter is hidden in or which car has the radio with the stuck microphone. __ Designed by Clint Turner, KA7OEI

Xmas Lights Tester -  Like every year around the same time, I hurried to get my Christmas tree all set up and the first thing we do when the tree is 'standing' we like to hang the lights in the tree.  Okay, better first test them before putting all 50 of them in the tree.  Yep!  Working beautifully.  I started a carefully planned organization of the lights so they would be evenly divided over the branches.  Now the second string of lights, tested, yep working.  in the tree with them.  Putting the plugs into the receptacle andoh no-- one series of them are on in full glory, all the others are out.  Annoyed I tried to 'fix them' by trying to push each bulb further into their sockets.  Still no go __ Designed by Jan Hamer

XTal Tester -  This is a simple XTal tester circuit.  T1 and XTal have formed an oscillator.  C1 and C2 are voltage divider for oscillator.  if the XTal is safe, the oscillator will work well and its output voltage will be rectified by C3, C4, D1 and D2, then T2 will run and LED will light.  The circuit is suitable to test 100KHz - 30MHz Xtal. __ Contact IQ Technologies

XTAL-Controlled FM TX (V6) -  My FM Wireless microphone V5 has been very popular, both as a beginners project and as a kit.  it is interesting that it has also been the biggest cause of lots of e-mail, the most common question being How can I make it crystal controlled?.  The oscillator can be made crystal controlled; replace the 2p7 with a 5th harmonic crystal.  The oscillator will then be very stable, so stable in fact, that it cannot even be modulated! This means that you could only use it to send CW (morse code)  __ Designed by Harry Lythall-SM0VPO

Zener tester -  if no zener (D2) is connected across C1 and S1 is switched on, the output rises rapidly to 45V DC.   This voltage can be measured with a DVM.   When an unknown zener is connected  across C1, output will be equal to the zener voltage.   if a normal diode (or a zener diode with zener voltage > 45 V) is hooked up, the DVM will measure 45 V.  if a diode is connected with the wrong polarity, the meter will indicate 0.6 or 0.7 V (even lower if the diode is a germanium or Schottky type). __ Designed by Aren van Waarde
