Circuits Designed by Dave Johnson, P.E. :

Watchdog Timer set for 36 Hrs -  A watchdog timer is often used in computer systems to detect when a computer is hung up and is no longer running properly.  if it does become locked up and is not able to supply a reset pulse to the circuit within a defined time frame the timer times out a . . . Hobby Circuit designed by David A. Johnson P.E.-April, 2010

Water Cistern Level Alarm -  I received an unusual request from a Discover Circuits visitor a while back.    The guy had a deep water cistern which has to be filled when nearly empty.  The cistern was described as a deep cylindrical tube, holding 1000s of gallons of drinking water.    Periodically, the cistern is filled from a tanker truck, when the water inside reached a critical level.    The guy wanted a simple circuit he could build which would flash an LED when the water level reached a certain depth.    That flasher would tell him it was time to order more water. . . Circuit by David A. Johnson P.E.-April, 2014

Water Filling Station Controller -  This circuit was requested by a company needing a simple way to fill a large tank with water with little fuss.    They wanted a low tech method to automatically fill the tank with water without constant monitoring.    They wanted to press a single pushbutton switch and then walk away.    in their application, the water tank is first filled to a certain level.    The fixed volume of water is then slowly drained off into a second tank, where the water is mixed with another material.    The empty tank is then ready to be filled again, for another cycle. . . . Hobby Circuit designed by Dave Johnson P.E.-April, 2011

Water Flowing in Pipe Indicator -  The vibrations associated with water flowing through a pipe are picked up by an inexpensive piezoelectric wafer.    The signal from the wafer is first boosted by a micropower transistor amplifier and then fed to an ultra low power voltage comparator.     When the vibration signal has sufficient amplitude, a FET transistor switch is activated…[Circuit designed by Dave Johnson P.  E.  , 6/06/2009]. . . Circuit by David Johnson P.E.-July, 2009

Water_Heater_Flame_Detector   -  Design a device that detected whether the gas flame of the heater was off or on - whether it was heating water or not -  and convey that information to the bathroom.  With a readout in the bathroom, one would know if there were enough hot water to take a shower. A battery powered circuit would be best for his situation.  The flame detector circuit could be connected to a battery powered LED flasher circuit.  The actual LED could be mounted next to the thermostat, using the same wire pathway as the furnace thermostat wires, located nearby.  A remote flashing LED would change color from green to red, whenever the flame was on. . . . Dave Johnson, Lubbock TX-DC Magazine - 3rd Q 2012

Water Level Monitor -  This system operates much like a classic float switch but without any moving parts.  The illustration shows how a system using two copper coils sealed inside a plastic pipe, can detect the level of water outside the pipe.  Whenever the water level is lower . . . Hobby Circuit designed by David Johnson P.E.-July, 2006

Water Pump controlled by Solar Power -  A Discover Circuits visitor had a problem.  He needed a simple on/off controller for his solar powered water pump.  His system used two 12v 50 watt solar panels wired in series.  The power from the solar panels drove a submerged water pump.  However, during . . . Hobby Circuit designed by David A. Johnson P.E.-October, 2010

Water Seepage Alarm -  This simple circuit sounds a beeper when its electrodes detect water.  it is powered by a single 1.5v N cell.  A small 1.5v button battery will also work . . . Hobby Circuit designed by David Johnson P.E.-June, 2000

Water Seepage Monitor -  A while back I received a request from a company who needed a water seepage detector.  They wanted a device that ran on 24vac and detected water using a fully isolated circuit.  They wanted a circuit which switched off 24vac to a load when water was detected. . . Circuit by David Johnson P.E.-January, 2011

Watt-Hour Meter Monitor -  Have you ever wondered how much power your house or apartment is using?  Most watt-hour meters are like the one shown below.  Some newer ones have a digital display but there millions of these older models still in use . . . Voltage_Monitor-Single_Lead-Acid_Cell   -  The circuit below uses a a low voltage reference and a voltage comparator from National Semiconductor to monitor the battery voltage.  The green LED is controlled by a tiny charge pump type voltage converter IC from Texas Instruments.  This device efficiently converts the 1.8v from the battery into 3.3 volts.  A dual Schmitt trigger inverter IC, also from Texas Instruments, was used to latch the normal and low battery states and a Honeywell Hall switch was used as reset switch. . . . Dave Johnson, Lubbock TX-DC Magazine - 3rd Q 2012

Voltmeter & AM meter using PIC Microcontroller -  Voltmeter and Ammeter can be easily made using PIC  Microcontroller having ADC (Analog to Digital Converter).  I am using PIC 16F877A and the result is displayed on an LCD Display.  PIC 16F877A is enough if you do this project only for testing purposes.__

Voltmeter + AM meter LCD panel -  This multimeter was designed to measure output voltage and current in a PSU, where the current sense shunt resistor is connected in series with load at the negative voltage rail.  it needs only one supply voltage that can be acquired from main PSU.  An additional function __ Contact IQ Technologies

Volume Control has Log Taper -  04/11/02 EDN Design Ideas:  Digital potentiometers provide a compact and convenient way to attenuate audio-amplifier signals.  However, most such potentiometers suffer from at least one flaw  a nonlogarithmic step increment.  To avoid this problem, a user must usually step the potentiometer in a nonlinear sequence to simulate a logarithmic taper Design by Doug Farrar, Los Altos, CA

Volume unit meter spans 60 DB dynamic range -  11/10/05 EDN Design Ideas:  An audio volume-unit meter displays peak-related audio amplitudes to aid in accurately setting recording levels or for displaying an amplifier's operating conditions.  A simple diode and capacitor network provide as a classic volume-unit meter's peak-weighted response, but the circuit typically limits response to about 23 dB of displayable dynamic range, and the meter suffers from errors that its pointer's inertia and mechanical "ballistics" introduce.  Contemporary displays eliminate the inertia problem by using arrays of lighted elements to form bar graphs, but any shortcomings in response and accuracy characteristics now shift to the signal-processing domain.   Design by Jon Munson, Linear Technology Corp, Sunnyvale, CA

VU & PPM Audio Metering -  A versatile and useful VU meter circuit, can also operate as a Peak Program Meter  __ Designed by Rod Elliott  ESP

VU Meter -  This simple VU Meter may be used in variety of projects.  Since real electro magnetic type VU Meters are no longer available or too expensive, I decided to make this one using LM3914 and 10 LEDs, which I can use in my other projects __ Designed by Nina Gajjar

VU Meter -  5 LED VU meter, in PDF format, includes circuit board, text in Finnish__

VU Meter -  A very simple circuit of indication of level, with 10 Led.  is used the circuit of half-wave rectification of precision round the IC 2, with gain one.  With switch S1, we can select the indication of Led.  The level of entry is 60 mV-1.25 V__

VU/Peak Meter with LCD Bargraphs -  This easy-to-build bargraph VU meter makes it easy to record audio signals at the correct level.  it shows both the average signal and peak levels in stereo on an LCD and you can adjust both the display range and number of steps.  A digital display option is also available.__ SiliconChip

Wart Zapper -  The Wart Zapper uses a single CMOS 7555 oscillator (IC 1) , for dual purposes, as follows: First, it pumps up a standard voltage tripler circuit, represented by the capacitor-diode network to the right of IC 1 in the circuit diagram.  This takes the voltage up to about 25V, if not a little more.  The purpose of increasing __ Designed by Rev. Thomas Scarborough

Watchdog Timer set for 36 Hrs -  A watchdog timer is often used in computer systems to detect when a computer is hung up and is no longer running properly.  if it does become locked up and is not able to supply a reset pulse to the circuit within a defined time frame the timer times out a . . . Watchdog-reset catcher aids embedded-system Debugging -  11/19/98 EDN Design Ideas:  NOTE: Multiple circuits included.  Scroll to find this one.   A simple "junk-box" circuit uses a 4013  CMOS flip-flop and a handful of passive components to determine whether random resets are the result of a blown stack or the result of the watchdog-reset circuit tripping (Figure 1).  You can also use this circuit to "grab" and hold Design by Scott Newell, PCSI, Fort Smith, AR

Water & vandal-proof keypad uses piezoelectric disc as sensor & buzzer -  04/21/14  EDN Design Ideas:  An ingenious and low-cost method to create a rugged “Ui”.  This design was done to get a sealed keypad for very wet environments (in my particular case, showers for swimming pools).  The keypad needed to be able to detect slight pressure on a stainless steel plate 0.4mm thick.  Apart from water protection, the solution offers an esthetical finish, as the user side is absolutely flat, with nothing visible other than the silkscreened print.  Another advantage of this type of keypad is that it is vandal-proof Design by Francesc Casanellas

Water Activated Alarm -  The circuit uses a 555 timer wired as an astable oscillator and powered by the emitter current of the BC109C.  Under dry conditions, the transistor will have no bias current and be fully off.  As the probes get wet, a small current flows between base and emitter and the transistor switches on.  A larger current flows in the collector circuit enabling the 555 osillator to sound __ Designed by Tom

Water Activated Relay -  in his circuit Marin has used two transistors wired as a high gain compound pair.  Transistor T1 may be a 2N2222A and T2 a BC108.  The current gain will be the product of each transistors beta, which will be a minimum of 140 x 110 or 15400.  The power supply used can be any voltage from 4.5 to 15 volts,  __ Designed by Marin Lukas

Water Alarm -  The LM1830 fluid detector IC from National Semiconductor is designed to be able to detect the presence of fluids using a probe.  This chip requires a relatively high supply voltage and is not the most frugal power consumer.  it is also quite specialised so unless you are buying in bulk the one-off price is not cheap must register on this site __ Designed by Elecktor July/Aug, 2010
