Optical sensor needs no tweaking - 06/13/02 EDN Design Ideas: The transfer gain of optical sensors spans a 16-to-1 ratio because of variations in the LED, phototransistor, ambient temperature, and optical path. The wide transfer-gain variation complicates output-resistor selection in dc-coupled circuits. You must size the output resistor to prevent high transfer gains from causing output-stage saturation, but low transfer gains yield low output-voltage sw Design by Ron Mancini, Texas Instruments, Bushnell, FL
Other Optical Sensors - Cadmium-Sulfide photoelectric cells change resistance with changing light levels and are useable over a tremendous illumination range. A simple CdS cell placed in the focal plane of a lens makes a telescopic 'electric eye' that can function at midnight or noon, with the appropriate circuitry. Photo Meter Assesses Ambient Light - 10/15/12 EDN Design Ideas: When most PN-junction diodes are reverse biased, they will produce a small photovoltaic output as the light level is increased. Most PN-junction diodes can be used as photodiodes. While not optimized for this application, they do work. When the diode is reverse biased, it will produce a small photovoltaic output as the light level is increased. LEDs are particularly suited for this task because their housings are transparent Design by Raju Baddi
Photo Sensor - Here's a circuit that takes advantage of the photo-voltaic voltage of an ordinary LED. The LED voltage is buffered by a junction FET transistor and then applied to the inverting input of an op-amp with a gain of about 20. This produces a change of about 5 volts at the output from darkness to bright light. The 100K potentiometer can be set so that the output is around 7 volts in darkness and falls to about 2 volts in bright light __ Designed by Bill Bowden

Photodetector sorts objects - 03/04/99 EDN Design Ideas: Most object-sensing systemshave problems detecting the presence of an object. The system in Figure 1 uses an oscillator to ease detection problems and allow sorting. The oscillator reduces power dissipation in the photodiode by operating the diode at 50% duty cycle. The oscillator also enables a 50% increase in the noise-filter time constant, and it functions as a timebase to allow object sorting. The oscillator chops the photodiode's bias. The signal the photodetector receives is a square wave; thus, a filter can remove optical noise. You normally need filtering when light shines through fans onto the optical detector. When required, you can place a bandpass filter in series with Q3's output. Design by Alan Erzinger, Harris Semiconductor, Palm Bay, FL
