Circuits Designed by Dave Johnson, P.E. :
  • On/Off Flip/flop Circuit with Automatic Timeout
This circuit is ideal when a device needs to be turned on and off with a single pushbutton switch, but also needs to turn itself off after some period of time. With the components shown, the output will stay on for only about 20 seconds.

Realtime clock Chip Makes Lowpower Oscillator:  11/23/00 EDN-Design Ideas / (added 8/03)  Many systems use watch-crystal-based, 32.768-kHz oscillators. In battery-powered designs, the 32-kHz oscillator may consume a fairly high percentage of the total power budget. Reduced power consumption equates to longer battery life, smaller batteries, and smaller products. Ricoh (www.ricoh.com) manufactures more than 10 types of real-time-clock chips, including the RS5C372B (Figure 1). This device is an eight-pin IC with a built-in oscillator, programmable periodic interrupts, and an I2C interface to a µC. The only function the device in Figure 1 uses is the 32-kHz oscillator. Using only the IC and the crystal, the circuit consumes low current over its 1.5 to 6V power-supply range, as the table in Figure 1 shows. The CMOS-based output delivers a waveform with an amplitude of 0V to VDD....

Pressing the on/off momentary switch starts the cycle, and the circuit provides power to the applic......

Simple 6 Digit 40MHz Frequency Counter Module:  Here is the design for a very low cost 6-digit frequency counter module using of the shelf components (and not that expensive 74C926!). The standard circuit will display directly in Hz (1MHz max), and there is a separate on board divider that will allow you to display directly in KHz (approx 40MHz max). Because the display reads directly in Hz or KHz there is no need for decimal point switching and the associated complexity. There are no switches or controls, simply feed the signal into one of two inputs and you have a direct readout in Hz or KHz. This circuit is ideal for adding a low cost frequency display to a function generator or other design. I doubt if it is possible to get a cheaper design using off the shelf components!. In fact, I challenge anyone to make a cheaper design using garden variety components!....  (add 11/05)

Simple Choc Block Supply:  A very simple adjustable power supply can be built on a single piece of chocolate block based on the L200CV IC. The output is variable between 0 and 30V, with an adjustable current limit up to 2 amps. (added 10/06)

Simple phototimer Controls load:  04/18/02 EDN Design Ideas  /  (added 1/05)  In industrial and home applications, the need sometimes exists for a device that, after activation by some physical effect, such as light, temperature, or sound, switches a load on for a predetermined time. The load, such as a lamp, motor, solenoid, or heater, usually derives its power from the ac line. ...

Simple Timer Exploits OpAmp Bias Current:  07)/21/94 EDN-Design Ideas / (added 5/03) The simple, low-cost analog timer in Fig 1 exploits the parasitic input-bias current of op-amp IC1. The timer achieves long time delays even though it uses only low-value, inexpensive ceramic chip capacitors. After all, because the input-bias current is the minimum current flow into an op amp, this method produces the longest time delays possible from a given capacitor and op amp....

Single Gate Synchronizes Clock:  10/27/94 EDN-Design Ideas / (added 11/05)  The deceptively simple circuit in Fig 1 harbors formidable power. Consider when you have a data-clock input to your system for an existing serial data stream. Then, your system people surprise you with a new serial data source after your real-estate budget is used up. You can synchronize the new signal to the clock and assign the data to an unused input bit without unduly burdening your software engineers. But, if the gadget that supplies the data clock goes haywire, your new signal dies with it; that is, unless you supply the clock and synchronize it to the functioning existing clock by using a spare inverter....

Slow diodes or handy timing devices?:  09/16/04 EDN Design Ideas  /  (added 1/05)  Most designers consider slowness in diodes to be an imperfection or a limitation. Why not take a more positive view of the situation? After all, a zener or an avalanche diode is no more than a diode with a limited breakdown voltage, and you can view a varactor as a diode with a large and nonlinear parasitic capacitance....

Sun Up Alarm:  The Sun Up Alarm can be used to provide a audible alarm for when the sun comes up or it can be used in a dark area and detect when a light comes on. It can also be used to detect a light beam, headlights etc. The circuit works as follows. The phototransistor is very sensitive to light. (Any phototransistor will work fine) The sun shining on this device will provide a high to one of the NAND gates. This will cause another NAND gate to oscillate which will drive another gate to output a100hz tone. The transistor provides drive for the speaker. (added 3/03)

System implements digital clock modulation :  10/28/04 EDN Design Ideas  / (added 11/05)  In spread-spectrum and direct-sequence receivers, it's often necessary to change the frequency of the clock oscillator, and thus the spreading-code clock, to lock the receiver's reference pseudorandom-noise code to the incoming code. The original design used a VCXO (voltage-controlled crystal oscillator) for this function, but this revised design implements an all-digital method that provided a...
